Learning objectives:
  The course aims to introduce students technologies for video and voice transmission over IP networks. Labs will be focused on configuration video and voice communication using dedicated hardware devices and software applications.
  Audio and video standards. Online streaming, video on demand. RSTP Protocol. Videoconferences - H.323, SIP. Tools for communication. Principles of IP telephony. Voice encoding and transmission over IP. IP telephony architecture. Quality of service - integrated and differenciated services. Tools for IP telephony.
Knowledge and skills required for the course:
  • Principles and application of Unix and Windows operating systems
  • Studying texts and documents in English
  • Network architecture - ISO/OSI model, TCP/IP
  • Unicast and multicast transmission
Learning outcomes and competencies:
  Students are familiar with applications and protocols for video and voice transmission over IP networks. They are able to setup multipoint videoconference, oneway voice and video transmission in HD quality. They are able to connect and configure all communication components.
Why is the course taught:
  Students acquire principles of IP telephony, video streaming and conferencing. They will practice typical use cases in the lab. The course prepares admins and designers of VoIP, streaming and video conferencing systems.
Syllabus of lectures:
  1. Introduction to Cisco devices. Cisco Call Manager Express.
  2. Fundamentals of IP telephony. Configuration of CCME.
  3. IP telephony using H.323.
  4. IP telephony using SIP.
  5. Configuring Asterisk. Mobile networks gateways.
  6. VoIP security.
  7. Multimedia, streaming, MPEG-TS.
  8. SAP, SDP and RTSP communication.
  9. RTP and RTCP transmission. Streaming at FIT.
  10. Introduction to video conferencing.
  11. Videoconferencing using H.323.
Syllabus of laboratory exercises:
  1. Configuring Cisco Call Manager Express and Cisco IP phones.
  2. Analysing CME calls.
  3. H.323 and Gnu GK.
  4. SIP and Asterisk.
  5. Advanced Asterisk configuration. Call monitoring.
  6. VoIP between PBXs, voice encoding.
  7. VoIP security.
  8. MPEG-2 encoders, SAP, SDP.
  9. IP video surveillance, RTSP, RTP, RTCP.
  10. Streaming using VLC.
  11. MS Expression Encoder, YouTube
  12. Video conferencing using H.323
  13. Video conferencing using SIP. Skype.

  • Home assignments (24 points).

  • Written test 1: videoconferences (20 points).
  • Written test 2: IP telephony (20 points).
Exam prerequisites:
  • 12 points from home assignments and 18 points from lab assignments is required for the credit.
  • Minimum points to get credits is 50.
