Learning objectives:
  To provide students with the knowlwdge on the principles of peripheral operation control, the principles of communication between a controller and a peripheral device.
Description:
  The Themes of Lectures Devote to the Principles of Peripheral Operation Control and the Communication Both Between the CPU and a Controller and Between a Controller and a Peripheral Device. Typical types of interfaces (Centronics) and buses (SCSI) are described in details. The themes of laboratory tutorials are ditected towards completeing the knowledge gained during lectures (the communication with peripheral devices, peripheral operations control, the communication on buses).
Learning outcomes and competencies:
  Students will become acquainted with the principles of peripheral operation control and with the functions which must be covered by a peripheral device controller. In the future, this knowledge will allow them to solve problems combined with an external adapter design controlling a peripheral device operation.
Syllabus of lectures:
 
  1. The Principles of Peripheral Operation Control, PIO Modes, I/O Operation Based on IRQ Generation.
  2. Direct Memory Access (DMA), DMA Controller Operation.
  3. IRQ Controller Operation, IRQ Service, the Principles of IRQ Service Routine Development.
  4. Centronics Interface and Its Levels (SPP, EPP, ECP), Signals, Timing Diagrams, the Principles of Control and Communication.
  5. The Use of Peripheral Parallel Interface for Printer Control.
  6. HDD Register Structure, Peripheral Operation Diagrams.
  7. IDE, EIDE, SCSI Buses.
  8. SCSI Discs and Their Control.
  9. Graphics Adapter Control, AGP.
  10. FDD Unit, Controller Structure, the Control.
  11. USB Port.
  12. LAN Adapters.
  13. The Development of Drivers in Higher Operating System Environment (Windows).
