Citizen

The Citizen Group

Summary:

Young people who want to participate in the Nation1 Network will register as citizens. The term “citizen” was chosen to describe participants in the online community over “user” because “citizens” will not simply make “use” of the site, but have a responsibility to actively contribute to the continued well being and maintenance of the community. Registration will involve supplying Nation1 with information including name, age, location, contact details and interests. These details will be used to personalize the network to the citizen's situation. In this way, content that directly pertains to each Nation1 citizen will be displayed on their own, personal, automatically customized website while content that may, for example, be region-specific and intended for someone on the other side of the globe is not shown.

Citizens will be provided with their own e-mail address (@nation1.net) and web space. They will be able to code their own website, or use a simple homepage builder application. Via their personalized login page, citizens will be able to keep track of their e-mail and instant messaging inbox, subscriptions to discussion forums, events that may be of interest to them, and be informed when their friends or contacts are also logged in.

Nation1 is designed to be revolutionary, and we envisage many young people will take time to explore every facet before they actively participate. To ease their “initiation,” each new citizen can choose to paired with a long-time citizen who can answer any questions they have. Another key service of the citizenship system will be a variety of online language lessons complete with live chat tutorials where bilingual citizens can volunteer to help others learn a language.
