Sound Support for Unix
There are approximately four ways to get sound source for Unix:
- The standard VM from Ian Piumarta has basic sound support for Linux: monothreaded playback on little-endian, 16-bit sound cards.
- Lex Spoon has some patches to the above to add: recording support, and support for more sound cards. These are at http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~lex/squeak.
- At the same address, Lex has an even more featureful sound player which supports the
insertSamples
primitive and which is driven by interrupts instead of polling. However, due to lack of interest, it is no longer being maintained--basic sound playback and recording seems to be enough for most people.
- At the same address, Lex has some fledgeling support for SunOS and Solaris sound playback.
- It would be ideal to use a Network Sound Server instead of using these OS-specific sound systems. So far, no implementation exists.
