John Brant set up new Squeak mailing lists at:

Unless someone is setting up a permanent mailing list, I'll ask to get a departmental alias setup so that squeak@cs.uiuc.edu and squeak-annc@cs.uiuc.edu will work.

These are Smartlist mailing lists, so subscription requests are handled by squeak-request and squeak-annc-request with the subject of "subscribe" or "unsubscribe":

I setup an archive at:

The Squeak-annc list is at:

But there are no messages there yet.

Just for completeness: a combined archive of old and new lists, minus the error mesage flood, is at:

Stephen Travis Pope used to host the Squeak mail list. While dealing with compounding computer administrative headaches, he admitted he would be glad to have someone take over the responsibility, which John now has:

First, let me humbly apologize to all of you for the flakiness and then total outage of the Squeak mailing list. There has been a lot going on here in the last 2 weeks, including major break-ins (someone deleted random files on most of our disks), floods (all computer power was off over the last week-end), student programs reformatting root disks (still not sure how that was possible), machine upgrades not working, and backup tapes being unreadable, not to mention final projects and exams. The reason I haven't sent a note out before was that we always thought we'd have it solved "by the end of the day." If anyone has experience with DNS, NIS and sendmail configuration, I'd *love* a hand!

At any rate, I'm very happy that Hal took the initiative to set up a temporary squeak list. I'm including the membership of the Squeak list below from a backup dated 11/07, i.e., before the list was split into squeak-annc and squeak. The more recent incremental backups were lost.

It's a bit of a long story, but the bottom line is that we'd be *really* happy if someone could re-establish the mailing list somewhere else. We're happy to host the web/ftp site, but the traffic level and on-going maintenance of the majordomo list is a bit taxing. Once a new list is set up, I can forward the email address squeak@create to wherever it is. Hal, is the "temporary" arrangement you're doing a viable candidate? Who is actually webmeister@squeak.org? Can they host a majordomo or listserv mailing list? Who has alternative suggestions?

Again, I'm sorry for the recent silence in the squeak list. I hope you all used the break to get more development done.
