Recruiting Nation1 staff
Job description for ED:
Role
- To handle all legal and financial aspects of Nation1.
- To fundraise to match our budget targets, writing proposals and presenting to foudations, companies, rich people etc.
- To manage all aspects of the organisation, staff, rent, travel etc.
- To represent Nation1 in the community.
- Keeping sponsors and donors informed and happy.
- Coordinating any major tasks that the youth taskgroups can not (due to the time or specific work involved) conduct themselves.
- Working with the Board and the relevant youth volunteer taskforces to develop policies and strategies.
- Developing new projects for the Foundation (ie. complementary to the Nation1.net website).
Initially, before other staff are appointed the task would also involve:
- Acting as chief contact and administrative point
- Traveling with/assisting youth participants at promotional events/conferences.
- Working with the volunteer technical coordinators to ensure programming is running smoothly.
- Recruiting other key staff.
We also envisage that the Executive Director will need to travel significantly to develop and meet partners around the world and also better understand the needs of a diverse range of young people.
SKILLS AND BACKGROUND:
- Preferably under 25.
- University degree in related field (technology, youth work, finance) preferred (but not essential where strong practical experience can be demonstrated).
- Must have management experience within a financial non-profit organisation, such as University group or youth-wing of a political party/international NGO.
- Must have strong computer abilities, and perhaps an interest in the Internet and communications technologies.
- Must have strong interest or experience in global issues/preferably with a youth focus.
- Must have strong written and spoken english skills. Preferably speaks fluently in a second language.
- Preferably lives in NYC already, but may have lived in another country for a significant period.
- Must be enthusiastic about working with people even younger than themselves.
We want a top quality person and are budgeting a relatively generous
(considering the age we are targeting) salary package in the range of
in the first year (but probably only half time to begin as I said).
What will the Executive Director do?
- This person will be based in NYC. They will do all the work that people in FundsGroup seem to be so reluctant to do... manage budgets, find more money, manage other staff, coordinate with the board, develop new project ideas, build partnerships with other organisations by attending meetings etc, after advice from the volunteer taskforces (us!) and the Board of Directors etc.
What kind of person are we looking for...
Well, you tell me! I would guess someone who is quite young, but who has completed a university degree with a focus on something related to Nation1 (ie. politics, public policy, media, education) or something practical for the job (ie. accounting, commerce, law, fundraising, communications). The perfect person has probably been the leader of a number of previous youth groups, including those which have had quite large budgets and a membership in the thousands. During their time with these organisations, the membership and scope of the organisation has grown significantly - and the candidate would have sucessfully managed and leveraged these changes. The person has probably travelled widely, and can speak at least one language other than English with a fair degree of fluency. The perfect person
already lives in NYC (although probably not all their life) and has
extensive contacts with other youth organisations. The perfect person also has an enthusiasm for new technologies and the Internet (if not the ability to program in a number of computer languages). They will not be afraid to work with, and under, people younger than themselves, but instead will grasp it as an opportunity. They will recognise the great potential Nation1 has, and devote a significant amount of energy to the project. They do not have to have many years experience in non-profit management (although, as noted above, a track-record in financial youth groups is important). However, the other criteria will be judged with even greater emphasis. Considering the minimal emphasis on necessery job-experience, the salary package around $60,000 (with the potential for a 6% performance-based
raise) seems very attractive.
Finding the perfect person - ideas include:
- Locating someone within university organisations.
- Locating someone via the MIT Media Lab (this is not the best idea,
although they may be able to help us out privately)
- Advertising via the Global Youth Action Network/other mailing lists.
- Engaging an Executive Search company, probably on an in-kind sponsorship
basis if possible.
- The need to find someone we already know... that's difficult though.
I had a hunt around the Internet for some resources to help us find someone:
Isaacson Miller - http://imsearch.com/, an Executive Search firm with a
focus on "organizations with a mission", based in Boston. info@imsearch.com. John Isaacson is the person to write to.
- http://www.nonprofit-staffing.com/ is another Executive Search firm that works on a "try before you buy" basis.. you only pay when you hire someone they found. based in nyc - maybe good to contact anyway. obviously not in the same league as Isaacson Miller.
