Welcome to my page at this Swiki.
Squeak RPM's
Squeak RedHat packages are available from http://members.xoom.com/Pflipp/projects/squeak.html. They should work completely now.
What is Squeak?
I am making a sum here of all the things that are available in Squeak, because I know you will be surprised how much it is, even though you may work with it very often. Especially compared with the available products of the same kind on any host OS, I think this is unbelievable. Here goes:
- Fully interactive object-orientated bytecode-interpreted programming language
- Fully integrated development, testing, prototyping and debugging environment
- Completely self-hosted windowing system
- Paint utility
- 3D, Alice and VRML browsing and editing possibilities*)
- MIDI playing and editing possibilities*)
- WWW- and other protocols server*)
- WWW-browser with JavaScript and ShockWave support
- ShockWave browsing and editing possibilities*)
- PostScript reading and editing possibilities*)
- Mail client
- Chat (IRC) client
- Telnet client
- Smalltalk-to-C translator*)
- Tetris and other standard small games (Freecel as a goodie)
- File browser
- Applescript support*)
- TrueType font support*)
- The most neat and stable way to get the bleeding edge of technology on your desktop!
*): Don't bother me on these. I know that they exist, I have seen most of them work, but I don't know any gory details of them.
Oh, by the way, it is ALL FREE (to the extent of the license, off course). I just started wondering why it isn't next to Windows and Linux...
Stefan's thought on licenses
The past month has seen the birth of a lot of "free internet providers" in Holland. Non-free provider XS4ALL started an advertisement campaign in which parts of the providers' licences are quoted. It shows that all these providers use their client's personal information for commercial purposes. The very very sneaky licence of Microsoft Hotmail is also quoted, so be aware, also outside Holland.
In the information age, I more and more wish that I could control what other people do with my information. In software, this means complete openness. Open Source and Open Development.
"Free for non-commercial use" or "free trial" is sometimes also OK, but why on earth do you always need to fill in those registration forms with such software? It really gives you the feeling that Big Brother is Watching You and is Hoping to Empty Your Pockets One Day.
So here's to Squeak, for not having a registration form!
